The "cons" are the price of staying ahead of the industry, not a reason to fall back. 21 WHY GREEN MARINE MATTERS ― Independent, third-party credibility: in an environment where "greenwashing" accusations are a real reputational risk, an independently verified result is a defensible, third-party-backed answer to anyone who questions the Port's environmental claims. ― The Port of Seattle is not just in compliance, but it's a recognized leader: the Port achieved Level 5 (excellence and leadership) across nearly all applicable indicators for 2025. ― A structured framework for continual improvement: Green Marine forces discipline: participants must improve year over year across indicators as criteria get more rigorous - this converts "we care about the environment" into a measurable, auditable improvement trajectory. ― Benchmarking against peer ports and the global industry: Green Marine now spans more than 220 participants across a dozen countries, including 53 ports in the United States and Canada, 1 in Australia, and 8 in Europe, where the ports program just launched. The program also certifies terminals, ship owners, and shipyards. 22 WHY GREEN MARINE MATTERS ― Direct alignment with Century Agenda and existing commitments: Green Marine participation is not an add-on cost center - it's the measurement and accountability layer for goals the Commission has already committed to. ― First Mover / Legacy Leadership: The Port of Seattle was the first U.S. West Coast participant to achieve Green Marine certification (2013). That "first" is a durable reputational asset - competitor and peer ports now point to Seattle as the benchmark. ― Stakeholder, peers, and customer trust: Green Marine certification is a recognized signal across the maritime industry precisely because of its rigor and third-party verification. Peers certified participants (NWSA, Ports America, SSA Marine, Motive Power Marine, Washington United Terminals, Puget Sound Pilots, and FRS Clipper) share the same goals and speak the same language. 23 RIGOR REQUIRES INVESTMENT ― Annual staff effort to document/evaluate/report: This effort is the Port's existing environmental management discipline. Green Marine channels work already being done into a comparable, externally recognized format. The "cost" is largely reporting overhead on programs the Port runs regardless of certification. ― Criteria get more rigorous over time: This prevents complacency and keeps the Port ahead of where regulation will eventually land. ― Public reporting increases transparency/accountability for weak spots: Transparency about a few areas needing improvement, delivered inside a track record of Level 5 excellence in almost everything else, is a credibility strength; it's what separates real ESG from a marketing claim. Hiding underperformance is a bigger reputational risk than disclosing it inside a broader story of leadership. 24 FURTHER GLOBAL REACH In 2026, Green Marine International is undertaking a second cohort of pilot projects in the southern hemisphere.
