To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing in support of Port of Seattle funding for the Maritime Innovation Center at Fishermen’s Terminal.
As the CEO of Discovery Health MD, a martime medical services company, and a member of the inaugural cohort of the Maritime Blue
Innovation Accelerator, I would like to share my experience of the benefits of providing a collaborative work space for maritime focused
companies.
Our company was founded in 2016 to improve medical care to members of the commercial maritime industry. We joined the accelerator in
January 2020 in order to expand our network and gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing our clients. The commercial maritime
industry is highly fragmented, with little standardization, and each segment has unique operational requirements. We did not anticipate how
our connections through the accelerator would allow us to become regional leaders in COVID-19 response.
By building a network through our connections in the accelerator program, we were able to create a COVID Testing program for independent
fishermen at Fishermen’s Terminal, for catcher/processor and towing vessels at Pier 90, and for other maritime clients and travelers at SEA
airport. Without our network, we would not have been able to bring the necessary stakeholders together to deploy these programs in the time
necessary to ensure a successful 2020 fishing season. These connections have led to an affiliation with the UW Institute for Health Metrics and
Evaluation and the creation of an early detection program that is being rolled out to vessels this month to help prevent the introduction and
spread of COVID on vessels.
A collaborative workspace in the Maritime Innovation Center would help to foster these types of relationships and exchange of ideas. As the
maritime industry looks to solve tremendous challenges in the years ahead, solutions will require cross-functional teams to bring their unique
expertise to the table. Providing a physical space for this exchange is the first step.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for further discussion.
Best regards,
Dr. Ann Jarris
