Here is a written version of what I plan to say Tuesday (more or less):
Commissioners,
I am Laura Gibbons, a Seattle resident, and a volunteer member of the
Aviation Team of 350 Seattle, a group that works for climate justice.
I looked over the materials provided for your Aviation Study Session this
morning, and noted how carefully you are adjusting projected air travel based
on possible COVID scenarios.
I urge you to think as carefully about the impending climate chaos, and to
make another set of plans, plans that would entail a reduction in flying. Air
travel is the largest use of fossil fuel that can’t be replaced by clean energy
before the 2050 deadline, and so there is no way to meet local or global
targets for carbon emissions without a degrowth of aviation.
350 Seattle will keep trying to convince you to plan for the carbon-free future
our world requires. There is growing awareness of the climate impact of flying
among legislators and among the flying public themselves. Flying WILL
decrease one way or another, so please start planning accordingly.
Sincerely,
Laura Gibbons
