Dear Commissioners:
I am a Seattle resident whose top most concerns are climate change and climate justice. I am
particularly concerned with the Port claims that Sea-Tac airport is moving toward a greener
future while continuing to support, though new airport projects, an unsustainable growth in
airline traffic in our region. The large sums that the Port intends to spend on airport projects
should be redirected to sustainable projects that reduce GHG emissions and increase the
number of green jobs. As you are aware, the negative impacts of increased aviation in the
Puget Sound Region are not justly distributed. The heaviest users of aviation are not the ones
living under the flight path of the thousands of planes that fly in and out of Seattle daily.
The idea that the federal government has put planes in the air when there’s no demand is jaw-
dropping. (See https://grist.org/climate/the-government-is-forcing-airlines-to-fly-nearly-
empty-to-get-bailout-money/?
utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly&utm_content=
[[post.post_title]]?utm_medium=email). Meanwhile, I daily learn of residents in our state and
in the country who are struggling to pay their rent and get food on their table. The Port should
and must do better.
Thank you for your consideration.
