MOTION 2019-08:
A MOTION OF THE PORT OF SEATTLE COMMISSION
re-appointing Gerry Alexander as a member of the
commission Board of Ethics for 2019-2022.

TEXT OF THE MOTION
The Port Commission, in accordance with Resolution No. 3681, the Port of Seattle Code of
Ethics for Port Commissioners, hereby re-appoints Mr. Gerry Alexander to serve a three-year
term as a member on the Commission Board of Ethics effective June 4, 2019, and ending
June 3, 2022.
STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF THE MOTION
The Port of Seattle has established a strong and comprehensive ethics program for employees
and Port Commissioners to foster high ethical standards, strengthen public trust and confidence
in the Port of Seattle, and promote good governance. To further these goals, the Port of Seattle
Commission adopted Resolution No. 3681, a revised Code of Ethics for Port Commissioners, on
May 14, 2013.
The Code of Ethics for Port Commissioners provides for the appointment of an Ethics Board
composed of three members by majority vote of the Commission “to ensure proper and
consistent implementation”of the Code. The Board serves as the formal mechanism to consider
all complaints against Port Commissioners and acts as an advisory body to provide guidance on
ethical matters to the Port Commission or individual Commissioners upon request.
Mr. Alexander is a noted jurist, first elected to the Washington Supreme Court in 1994. He
served as Chief Justice from 2001 to 2010. He also has served as an alternate member of the
Judicial Conduct Commission, former chair of the Board for Judicial Administration, and as an
adjunct professor of law. Mr. Alexander is of Counsel at Bean, Gentry, Wheeler & Peternell in
Olympia, Washington, and has served as a member of the Port Commission’s Board of Ethics
since June 4, 2013.
