SUBJECT: Resolution No. 3651, Second Reading and Final Passage, Renaming Elliott Bay Park as

Centennial Park

ACTION REQUESTED:

Resolution No. 3651, Second Reading, and Final Passage, authorizing the renaming of the Port of

Seattle’s Elliott Bay Park as Centennial Park in honor of the Port’s Centennial Celebration.

BACKGROUND:

This year is the Port of Seattle’s 100

anniversary, and there are a number of activities and

communications planned, including a commemorative book, an online timeline, a documentary-style

video, and Centennial presence at various community events, including the Maritime Festival and

Fishermen’s Fall Festival.

Passage of this resolution would create a permanent legacy for the Port’s first 100 years in the form of

renaming of Elliott Bay Park, a popular public destination enjoyed by hundreds of people each day. The

renamed Centennial Park would be a fitting reminder of the Port’s formative years on Elliott Bay and a

tangible symbol of the sustainable future for the Port’s next 100 years.

Elliott Bay Park was established in 1980 and offers eleven acres of amenities, including 4100 feet of

shoreline, 1.5 miles of pedestrian and bike trails, a rose garden, exercise areas, picnic spaces and a fishing

pier. It is bordered by the Port’s Terminal 86 on the east and the City of Seattle’s Myrtle Edwards Park

on the south. Like all the Port’s parks, it is maintained with 100% organic landscaping practices and has

earned the Salmon Safe designation.

The Port plans to hold a rededication ceremony on Earth Day, April 22, and to erect new signage at the

park’s three main entry points to designate the new name.
