POLICE SPECIALISTS
Re: Break and Lunch Periods
The Parties signatory to a 2008-2012 Collective Bargaining Agreement covering Police
Specialists agree to the following:
1. Article 12.02 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement provides for an unpaid meal
period “to be either one-half (1/2) hour or one (1) hour by employee’s option.” The
Police Specialists also receive two fifteen minute breaks per day.
2. The Police Department encourages employees to take their breaks during the middle
of each four hour work period.
3. For the employees’ convenience, Police Specialists who take a one-half (1/2) hour
meal period may choose to forego their daily breaks in order to combine the break
time with the one-half (1/2) hour lunch period together for a one (1) hour block of
time for their lunch period. Breaks and meal periods, whether combined or separate,
must be used during the work day rather than to shorten the length of the Specialist’s
scheduled work hours.
4. The Port will give reasonable consideration to Police Specialists’ requests to combine
their breaks and lunch.
5. A Police Specialist who desires a change to his/her normally scheduled break and/or
meal period must obtain advance approval from his/her supervisor.
6. This MOU will remain in effect through December 31, 2011.
All other terms and provisions of the 2008-2012 Collective Bargaining Agreement shall remain
in full force and effect.
